The Women Who Ride (WWR) Conga Line is a fundraiser motorcycle group, in support of Breast Cancer research. This group, which is not exclusively women, rides from all across America and Canada to Shell, WY.
THIS YEAR the Conga continues to Colorado… to The Garden of the Gods…July 23rd.
History of the Conga:
The Conga originated back in 2008 when a woman nicknamed ‘Flo‘ bought a motorcycle from Donna Palladino of Ride Like a Pro in Hudson, FL. She knew after picking up her bike it would be a very long ride back. She decided to contact her internet friends to ride along with her. Many escorted her some 6,000 miles across the continent, dancing her safely home. Hence the name Conga, like the dance.
The Women Who Ride took Flo into their homes, fed her, rode with her, treated her like a queen. In 2009, Flo’s husband also bought a bike from Ride Like a Pro and another full blown Conga was born, bigger and better then the last. Flo decided this amazing event should do some good and go towards a cause. And the Women Who Ride decided to raise money for breast cancer research because it directly affects all of them. So they “Conga-fied” (dressed up themselves & their bikes in pink) and hit the road to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. That year they managed to raise $12,000. In 2010, it was decided to meet in a central location; Wyoming. To their surprise, more and more women AND MEN participated. Together they surpassed their goal and raised over $36,000 for the fight against breast cancer!!
CONGA RIDES IN COLORADO:
When Flo commented on a picture of The Garden of the Gods, posted by Debi Holmes of Westminster, she asked where it was in relation to Fort Collins. Flo explained that her group will be in Fort Collins for 5 days of fundraising following the carousing in Shell, Wyoming. Flo and the group accepted Debi’s invitation to take them on a scenic ride to, through, and back from The Garden of the Gods on Saturday, July 23rd. Flo also extended her trust, encouragement and support when Debi suggested inviting anyone & everyone to join the ride… join the Conga For The Cause motorcycling to the Garden of the Gods!
With very little time, Debi Holmes enthusiastically accepted the generous offers of resources, time, donations and willingness to share the ride details with others.
Debi would like to give special thanks to everyone at Sun Harley-Davidson (especially her husband, Reed Holmes), The Rocky Mountain Asphalt Divas, Fred & Debby Kreider of Cycle Matters, and Michael & Jaye Roth.
To clarify… This is not a dealership or chapter associated ride. Debi hopes with enough attention and participation, Flo will include Colorado in the Conga every year and future rides will be coordinated with all dealerships, similar to the Toys For Tots ride.
